What Is Cryptocurrency and How Does It Work?

Cryptocurrency, or “crypto” for short, is a type of digital money that operates on the internet. Unlike traditional money like Ugandan Shillings (UGX) or the dollar ($), crypto is not controlled by any government or bank. Instead, it is powered by something called blockchain technology, a secure, transparent system that records every transaction.

Key Facts about cryptocurrency:

  • You can use crypto to send or receive money instantly across the world.

  • Some people buy crypto as an investment, hoping its value will grow.

  • The most popular cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT (Tether).

In Uganda, more and more people are turning to crypto because it offers:

  • Faster and cheaper international payments.

  • A way to earn or save without relying on traditional banks.

  • An opportunity to explore digital business or freelancing.

Reminder: Crypto is real money. Always be careful where you buy or store it.
